Replacing the existing flagship FC8600 series of cutting plotters, the latest FC9000 series is now available from Graphtec GB. It is said to provide one of the highest performance capabilities currently available for this class of cutting plotter.

The FC9000 is available in a choice of four different sizes (the 160, 140, 100 and 75 models) that will respectively accommodate material widths of 1,626, 1,372, 1,067 and 762mm. With an increased maximum cutting speed of 1,485mm/sec and a cutting force of 600gf (5.88N), the FC9000 is considered to have set a fresh benchmark for high-end cutting involving a much wider range of sign and graphics and digital printing media in varying thicknesses.

A key attribute of the FC9000 is the optional media take-up spool that will increase the efficiency of roll-to-roll work undertaken by digital print specialists. For example, using the integrated barcode function, it is possible to print up to 50 metres of material overnight and then cut the following morning, thereby creating a seamless workflow capability. A further attribute is the new auto panelling function which prevents skewing of longer lengths of material to be cut by automatically splitting the job into smaller sections for guaranteed precise sequential cutting.

The FC9000 also incorporates the latest Version 8 of Graphtec’s proprietary ARMS (Advanced Registration Mark Sensing) system for radically enhanced media tracking and cutting accuracy. It is also supplied as standard with the latest Graphtec Pro Studio or optional Pro Studio Plus and Cutting Master 4 design and production software, with the latter available as a plug-in option for integration with other popular software programs such as Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW. The FC9000 also meets all relevant CE safety standards and comes with a three-year performance warranty.

    October 07 2019

Memjet adds a longer-life printhead, enhanced printhead durability, and expanded colour gamut to its second-generation, modular print technology.

Memjet today announces new enhancements to its second-generation printing technology called DuraLink. Based on feedback from current and future OEM partners, DuraLink XL enhancements include a more robust printhead, four times the printhead life and an expanded colour gamut. These features augment DuraLink’s value as a vital printing technology that enables the rapid, cost-effective development of next-generation solutions in commercial, packaging and industrial printing markets.

“Since its introduction, dozens of OEMs from a variety of print markets have engaged with DuraLink technology,” said Eric Owen, general manager at Memjet. “As these partners enter into the lengthy development process, they provide valuable insight on how DuraLink meets their needs, and, more importantly, how we can make the technology even better. These enhancements reflect how Memjet works collaboratively with our OEM partners to ensure our printing technology — and the solutions created with it — has the features, functionality and growth potential to meet the demands of print markets today and well into the future.”

    Meeting the Growing Packaging Opportunity

“Nearly 60 percent of DuraLink’s OEM engagements are focused on packaging,” said Owen. “To meet the needs of this large customer base, Memjet integrated new colour and durability features into DuraLink technology.”

Memjet has added orange, green and violet to DuraLink, creating a seven-colour option for OEM partners who need it. This expanded colour gamut means OEMs can create solutions that enable end users to accurately hit brand colours and produce more realistic images — capabilities that are critical in the growing food, fashion and packaged goods markets.

Further DuraLink enhancements improve print production in the corrugated market. When printing on corrugated, it is often difficult to position the media consistently under the printhead. This creates an irregular surface that tends to move during the printing process. While the media is being transported, it can often hit and damage the printhead.

To reduce the possibility of contact between the printhead and the substrate, DuraLink can now be positioned up to three-millimeters above the board. If there is contact, the nozzle plate of DuraLink’s proprietary hardened silicon surface is strike and damage resistant. This makes it difficult to damage to the nozzle plate and, due to the unique design, unlikely that the substrate will ever reach the printhead.

    Robust Printhead Life

OEMs across all markets will benefit from the longer life of DuraLink printheads. Previously, the DuraLink printhead had a 50-litre head life. The enhanced DuraLink XL printhead is now four times that number, lasting for an average of 200 litres.

This longer printhead life provides lengthier uptime and improves efficiency for end-users. Unplanned downtime is virtually eliminated as end users can plan for printhead replacements to happen during normal maintenance or paper-roll changes.

These features are available to all DuraLink customers, regardless of where the customer is in the development process.

“Memjet is an innovator, continually striving to make our products better. We also ensure that all customers have access to this innovation,” said Owen. “So whether a customer has already built their system, or has a system in development, they can still incorporate and leverage the new features of DuraLink.”

    September 17 2019

Following in the footprints of the swissQprint Nyala flatbed printer, the new Karibu roll to roll printer is the latest model to undergo tests as specified by the ISO 20690 standard. The result once again: outstanding energy efficiency.

Confirmation comes from experts at Fogra: the new Karibu roll to roll printer from swissQprint is highly energy efficient. When they tested it as specified by the ISO 20690:2018 standard, Karibu scored even higher than the Nyala flatbed printer. swissQprint had this model put through its paces last year, when it was also given the rating "outstanding energy efficiency".

The ISO 20690 standard specifies methods for determining the energy consumption of digital printers and thus allows comparison of their operating costs and ecological footprints.

    Standardised measurement
In order to model realistic system usage, the standardised measurement includes four different printer statuses. To ensure that results are consistent, the experts used three different printing modes several times with a standardised print file. For example, Karibu in its most productive "speed" printing mode applies 71 square metres to the substrate per kilowatt hour.

  • + Xeikon enhances inkjet capabilities

Xeikon has developed a new option for printers looking to enhance and increase their range of inkjet-printed labels, combining its X-800 workflow and PantherCure UV inks to create a tactile layer.

    September 03 2019

Xeikon has developed a new option for printers looking to enhance and increase their range of inkjet-printed labels, combining its X-800 workflow and PantherCure UV inks to create a tactile layer.

This is responsible for a so-called ‘haptic effect’ in print, noted Xeikon, with printers able to create labels with enhanced tactility, textures and a luxury feel utilising the new option. The beer, beverage, food, and health and beauty markets are identified as viable targets for such labels.

No modifications are required to the pre-press file.

Jeroen Van Bauwel, director of product management at Xeikon, explained, ‘The technology generating the tactile and textured layer is embedded in the Panther’s X-800 workflow. It is the brand owners and designers who define the structure, shape and form of the design. When the file is received, the workflow automatically recognises the elements of the design and generates the information required to drive the printhead – that’s what creates the haptic effect in print on the end product.’

In order to further optimise the workflow of its Panther technology, Xeikon has developed automated optimisation of the white ink layer, embedded in the X-800 workflow. When producing labels on clear facestocks, an opaque white is required to make the design standout. A result can be varying ink layer thicknesses across the web. An uneven thickness of the ink layer will generate a telescoping effect on the printed rolls. In the past, press operators have overcome this by printing smaller rolls, resulting in more frequent roll changes and extra waste in material and time, noted Xeikon. One option to overcome this has been to spend extra time in pre-press to reduce the amount of white required.

This time-consuming pre-press work can now be handled in a fully automated way by the X-800 digital front-end without intervention at any stage in the production process. The X-800 automatically reduces the white layer. The extent of reduction will depend on the colours that come on top of it.

Van Bauwel concluded, ‘Xeikon continues to work towards excellence to enhance every facet of its portfolio. We continue to look for opportunities to make savings on costs and time. By improving each small step of the process, we can make a big difference to the overall production process and reduce manufacturing costs.  Achieving haptic effects in print through the unique capabilities of our X-800 workflow and ink optimisation not only boosts and increases the range of possible applications but allows printers to streamline their operations.’

    August 15 2019

The latest Kongsberg digital cutting and creasing innovation from Esko, a global provider of integrated hardware and software solutions for the packaging, label and wide format sectors, makes it possible for corrugated converters to cut, crease and perforate jobs without the need to change tools, boosting finishing productivity by up to 50%.

Kongsberg Dual-HDU-1The newly launched Dual Heavy Duty Unit means operators no longer need to manually intervene in tool changes on Kongsberg digital cutting tables for those jobs that require creasing, cutting and perforation. The machine will automatically switch and use the right tool throughout the job, significantly ramping-up production efficiency.

Thanks to the uniquely engineered design of a Kongsberg table, it is possible to exercise an unrivalled 50kg of downforce on corrugated materials from single to triple wall, without compromising speed or quality. The Dual Heavy Duty Unit delivers better crease quality, even on materials with a high recycled material content. When combined with the Esko CorruSpeed Tool, converters can cut and perforate corrugated substrates with die-cut like quality at full machine speeds of up to 100m/min, offering the ultimate short run digital cutting solution for corrugated applications.

The CorruSpeed Tool is designed specifically for high-speed digital finishing of corrugated board and is unique in that it uses a static knife in combination with a patented knife foot design to simulate the effects of ejection rubbers in conventional die tooling. The unique design results in cleaner, more accurate cuts, without burrs. It produces a crisp edge finish even at the highest speeds,  smoothly cutting a wide Kongsberg Dual-HDU-2variety of corrugated board types up to 7mm double wall BC flutes.

The new Dual Heavy Duty Unit is a unique step forward for the Kongsberg range. It combines, for the first time, two independent wheels in one heavy duty unit. Unlike other solutions, operators maintain all the advantages of superior downforce and speed with the advantages of additional flexibility and higher throughput.

Russell Weller, Esko Product Manager, commented: “The new Dual Heavy Duty Unit is perfect for corrugated point of sale and packaging jobs, allowing our customers to run without changing tools, delivering productivity boosts of up to 50%.”

“It enables faster machine setup and higher quality digital cutting and creasing of corrugated board - targeted at sample making and short run production of corrugated containers, displays and signage – so most importantly speed and quality does not suffer,” he said. “Both positions still pack a 50kg downforce and run through material at full machine speeds. When converters add the CorruSpeed tool into the mix, corrugated board can be cut at 100m/min with die-cut like quality that is not achievable anywhere else.”

The Dual Heavy Duty Unit and Corruspeed tool retrofit on all existing Kongsberg C, Kongsberg C Edge and Kongsberg XP tables running iPC. To find out more about how the new Dual Heavy Duty Unit and CorruSpeed tool can benefit your business, please visit www.esko.com.

    August 06 2019

At PrintEx 2019 Epson Australia will launch the new SureColor F6360, 44-inch dye-sublimation printer created for soft signage, merchandise, custom décor and clothing manufacturers. The new printer combines enhanced production flexibility with an improved total cost of ownership (TCO).

The new SC-F6360 is designed to replace small format screen printing, with a flexible low-cost solution that enables repeatable high-quality output production with minimal equipment, materials and mess. It produces images that are not only bright and colourful, but also extremely durable. It can be used for imaging onto fabric with 50% or more artificial content such as Polyester, Lycra and Neoprene. It can also be used on PVC, poly film, and materials which will accept a polyester spray and resist damage through short-term exposure to heat and pressure such as ceramic, glass, metal, coated plywood, certain plastics, fibreglass and polycarbonates.

The SC-F6360 is designed for easy, flexible, and dependable operation. Jobs can be turned around quickly and efficiently. The printer employs a digital process that enables image creation, editing and customisation, with significantly less equipment, materials, and skill than traditional methods. The process is compatible with text, line art and photographic images and is particularly cost-effective with small to medium production runs. The new model is designed for user-self set-up and can be purchased as a base unit with an integrated auto-cutter for sheet based transfer using a flat heat press or efficient high-speed roll-to-roll production with an optional Auto-Take-Up and calendar style heat press.

What differentiates the SC-F6360 is its cost effective operation and superior output quality. Images are processed using Precision Dot Technology and printed using the included Epson Edge Print software. When combined with the advanced Epson ink, MicroPiezo Print Head, and Dye Sublimation process, it enables the printer to achieve output that traditional equipment with 6 or 8 colours would be grateful for, using just 4 inks. The ink ships in inexpensive 1.1L bags and each print consumes very little ink. The printer consumes minimal power and can be operated in a ventilated office environment. Replacing the F6200, the new model supports user self-set-up and a high degree of user self-maintenance complete with self-help videos activated by a QR-Code.

Whether you’re producing banners, back-lit fabric signs, sportswear, custom cabinetry, furniture coverings, or fashion items, the SC-F6360 has been designed to play a crucial part in the seamless delivery of a total, end-to-end colour printing solution.

Key features of the SureColor F6360:
    Flexible operation
    - Uses roll media from 10 to 44” wide, up to 150mm in diameter
    - Easy top loading with improved spindle-less mounting
    - Integrated Auto Cutter for simple sheet based output
    - Optional Auto Take Up for roll-to-roll production
    - Print modes for fabric and hard surface imaging

  • + Océ Australia Announces New Arizona 1300 Series at Opening of New Customer Experience Centre

At the opening of Océ Australia’s high-tech Customer Experience Centre, Océ took the opportunity to formally introduce the new Océ Arizona 1300 series flatbed UV printer ...

    June 04 2019

At the opening of Océ Australia’s high-tech Customer Experience Centre, Océ took the opportunity to formally introduce the new Océ Arizona 1300 series flatbed UV printer to a gathering of Océ customers and industry professionals.

The new addition to the award-winning Océ Arizona range was one of the highlights at FESPA earlier this month, and guests at the new Centre’s launch found it equally impressive.

The latest in the popular and proven Arizona range, the 1300 series is designed for the high-productivity mid-volume wide-format and digital print markets. It delivers innovations in print speed, ease of use and curing technology which Product Manager Garry Muratore says will allow print service providers to do more, do it smarter…and do it now.

“The Océ Arizona 1300 series is a great choice for print service providers in the sign and display graphics industry who want to really lift productivity, versatility and quality,” Muratore said today.

“Today’s print buyer is not only discerning in terms of quality, but also creative, driving a new wave of innovative print products on an almost limitless range of media and substrates. This is where the Arizona 1300 series delivers in spades.”

This affordable machine features productive print modes which can easily expand capacity and throughput for small to mid-range businesses who currently need more speed and quality than their lower-end or older printers can deliver, or who are looking to expand their product range and increase output.

“The new Océ Arizona 1300 series answers the two biggest challenges faced by print service providers today – the need to boost productivity, and the need to diversify their application portfolio to take advantage of new business opportunities,” Muratore explains.

According to Muratore, operators will immediately notice the difference on both scores, with outstanding speed and ‘mind-blowing’ application latitude.

“The Océ Arizona 1300 stands out in its market segment as an easy-to-use, mid-range workhorse which not only delivers exceptional productivity, consistent prints and reliable performance, but uncompromised quality,” he says, adding that the range appeals particularly to print service providers interested in high-end applications like photography or fine art reproductions.

“Optional light magenta, light cyan, varnish and Océ’s brightest white ink ever, plus enhanced screening come standard and, because all our new LED inks are Greenguard Gold certified, the prints can be used anywhere, even in schools and hospitals,” Muratore says.

Like other Arizona models, the 1300 series also supports Océ Touchstone, so printers can easily create textured prints, both transparent and opaque, which Muratore says will ‘delight’ customers. “And, all these options – additional ink channels, roll media option and static suppression upgrade kit that makes for static and trouble-free printing on hard plastic materials like acrylic, polycarbonate and styrene – can be retrofitted, helping future-proof your business,” he adds.

Versatility is also a key, with the Arizona 1300 range easily able to produce flawless imaging to a wide range of media including odd shaped, heavy, smooth or pre-cut media, and even unusual substrates like canvas, glass or wood – a must for print service providers who want to build their business by expanding their product offering to create valuable new revenue streams.

This is married with a range of other innovative features, including an intuitive user interface which makes short work of designing even the most complex, multi-layered projects and allows operators to easily make last-minute adjustments at the printer, such as nesting, batching of complex jobs, step and repeat, mirroring and re-assignment of print modes.

Integrated Océ Arizona Xpert self-learning technology enhances this ease of use, enabling the machine to learn from what its operators do and then remember the ‘recipe’ to produce consistent, flawless results, time and time again.

“And, importantly, this range is fast,” Muratore adds. “All Arizona 1300 models deliver sharp, high-key prints at speeds of up to 53m2/hour. And productivity is boosted even further by innovations like Océ’s ‘instant-on’ capability, a new LED curing system which requires no warm up so the printer is always ready when you are.”

Rounding out the package is reliable performance, backed by the Océ Automated Maintenance System which allows hands-free printhead maintenance to restore nozzle function in seconds, and support from both Océ remote service and Océ Australia’s extensive national service and support team.

Australian businesses can choose from three GT models (Océ Arizona 1340 GT, 1360 GT, 1380 GT) with a flatbed print area of 1.25m x 2.5m, or three larger 2.5m x 3.08m XT models (Océ Arizona 1340 XT, 1360 XT, 1380 XT).

Customers invited to the opening of the CEC in Melbourne were first to see the new series in action, with an Arizona 1380GT installed at the Centre, but the range is already taking off with Muratore saying Océ expects to place several units in the field in coming months.

    June 04 2019

When you're one of the best car racing teams in the world, you need the very best graphics. That's why Renault F1® Team has chosen Roland DG’s new TrueVIS VG2, the second-generation eco-solvent print and cut device, to produce its race-leading Grand Prix prints.

Renault F1 Team has relied on Roland TrueVIS printer cutters for many years, using the reliable and high-quality systems at its Technical Centre in Enstone, Oxfordshire, to produce stickers for its racing cars, livery for its support vehicles, displays for its hospitality areas, and much more. Grand Prix events can attract worldwide audiences of more than 400 million viewers, and sponsorship is as competitive as the races themselves. High-end sponsors demand the highest precision in their brand colours and immediate replacement of any damaged advertising graphics; Renault F1 Team always travels with 30 identical versions of every sticker, totalling around 1,400 stickers for every race.

The award-winning TrueVIS VG2 Series has over 40 incredible enhancements, allowing Renault F1 Team to push its boundaries for accuracy, reliability and turnaround speeds even further. Those who have seen the VG2 in action describe it as both ‘best printer/cutter’ and ‘best print device in the industry today’. Designed to meet and exceed the needs of today's most demanding print professionals, the Roland DG TrueVIS VG2 is already proving incredibly popular, and attracting widespread attention at trade shows around the world.

Joe McNamara, Head of Paint and Graphics at Renault F1 Team, has praised the extended colour gamut, now with bold Orange for vibrant colours, natural skin tones and exceptional colour replication. "One of the first things we noticed was the improvement in the colour matching, because a lot of what we do covers an entire season," he comments. "It gives us a good opportunity to have a consistent colour." He adds: "It also comes with the new orange swatch which has about a hundred colours in there – yellows and oranges. It really makes our life easy when it comes to matching colours exactly for our corporate sponsors, and also for our own branding on cars, on garages, and on everything we take to races with us."

A video featuring Joe and his review of the new TrueVIS VG2 is available to watch at the link below. In the video, Joe notes that the new TR2 inks deliver brilliant bonding and stretching abilities for vehicle wrapping applications, and their fast-drying time allows his team to print, laminate and ship graphics to Renault F1 Team colleagues across the world on the same day. He adds that the VG2's perf-cut feature is making work "much easier" when producing multiples of the same sticker, while the new media clamp system is "a really clever piece of engineering".

"What's really impressive about this machine is what it can do for the price it's pitched at," he says. "To have that colour gamut for that price point is really amazing. I just don't know how Roland does it."
